Cultivating Calm: A Breathwork and Yoga Session at a Montessori School

Montessori School Visit

Recently, I had the joy of leading a breathwork and yoga session with a wonderful group of children at a Montessori school. It was a heart-centered experience filled with curiosity, connection, and mindful play.

Beginning with Feelings and Awareness

We started the session, creating a space for open conversation and emotional awareness. The children were invited to explore how they were feeling and to notice where in their bodies those feelings were showing up, whether in their tummies, chests, or faces. We also reflected on how we tend to respond to those feelings, gently introducing the idea that we can notice and choose how we respond.

Breathing Together

Next, we explored a range of breathing techniques to help calm our minds and bodies:

  • Starfish Breath – tracing our fingers with our breath, inhaling up one side and exhaling down the other.

  • The Breathing Ball – a visual tool that expands and contracts with our breath, helping us tune into the rhythm of inhaling and exhaling.

  • Snake Breath – a slow, hissing exhale that lengthens the breath and supports relaxation.

We talked about how these tools can help us feel more grounded and in control when we’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or full of big energy.

Sensory Resources & Sound for Presence

To deepen our connection to the present moment, we used sensory resources that engaged our touch and sight, helping us stay focused and aware. A highlight was the singing bowl, which offered a calming tone that echoed through the room. As we listened to the sound fade away, the children practiced stillness and presence, connecting to a shared moment of quiet.

Yoga with Play and Purpose

With our breath guiding us, we moved into playful yoga. The children explored balancing poses, animal shapes, and creative movements that helped channel their energy and build focus. Each movement was supported by the breath, showing how our bodies and minds can work together in harmony.

Closing with Self-Love and Connection

We ended the session by creating a joint Yoga Pose, and later placing hands on our hearts and repeating self-affirmations such as:

“I am kind.”
“I am strong.”
“I am calm.”
“I am loved.”

After affirming ourselves, we shared our kind words with one another.

A Moment to Remember

This session was a beautiful reminder of how naturally children engage with mindfulness when they are offered the right tools and a safe, playful space. Through breath, movement, sensory connection, and shared presence, we planted seeds of self-awareness, emotional regulation, and inner calm that the children can carry with them far beyond the classroom.
